Hot topics in chemistry journals

C&EN partnered with ACS Publications to examine trends with chemists’ research interests in recent years. In the maps that follow, the data illustrates the annual growth rate of research topics from 2010 to 2016. Research interest data is broken down by CAS-defined topic areas: applied chemistry; biochemistry; macromolecular chemistry; organic chemistry; and physical, inorganic, and analytical chemistry. CAS is a division of ACS, which publishes C&EN. Subtopic usage trends within each of those broader topic areas are also presented.

Research Trends

Find out global growth of chemical research interest in ACS journals from 2010 to 2016. ACS journals have experienced a strong increase in interest from Asian countries in recent years, with a growth rate that is more than double those in North America and Europe.09449-cover12-maptotal-1024

Applied Chemistry

Applied chemistry publications had the largest annual percent increases among the five CAS topic areas.

Biochemistry

Africa had the largest annual percent increase in searches for most topics, even though its overall numbers were low. That reflects the low—but increasing—number of African chemists.

Macromolecular chemistry

Australia and Oceania showed the largest annual percent increase in interest in macromolecular research publications.

Organic chemistry

Organic chemistry was the only area to show an annual decrease in the percent of searches in North America in 2016 from 2010.

Physical, inorganic, analytical chemistry

Nuclear phenomena had a large annual increase in searches but a low overall number of searches.
